W O R L D ' S G R E A T N O V E L S ------------- --------- ----------- 1944-1948 First Show: 10-28-44 Last Show: 07-23-48 Number Shows: 150 Audition Show: none Show Description: NBC launched it's "University of the Air" (aka: Inter-American University of the Air) in 1942, following the example of CBS's "American School of the Air". The University created a number of educational series, such as THE STORY OF MUSIC, OUR FOREIGN POLICY, AMERICAN STORY and THE PACIFIC STORY, to name a few. NBC offered companion handbooks for many of them. One of these was WORLD'S GREAT NOVELS, which ran from October, 1944 to July, 1948. The shows were produced in Chicago. Some colleges allowed use of the radio series for college credit. Evidence of this can be found in two broadcasts. During the broadcast of "The Red Badge of Courage", there is a message from the University of Louisville that they were using the broadcasts as part of its program of study. The broadcast of "Free" includes a short message from the Dean of the University of Chicago. This purpose of the series, at the title suggests, was to bring great literary works to radio, presented in a scholarly fashion. Although some of the shows were 30-minute adaptations of well known works, most novels were adapted as multi-part series, consisting from two to six 30-minute episodes. All were well produced and acted. According to the New York Times, the shows initially aired Saturdays on WEAF (660 KHz) at 7:00PM, lasting in this time slot for 18 shows. On Feb. 23, 1945, the series moved to Friday evening, at 11:30 PM. WEAF changed it's call to WNBC on Nov. 2, 1946, but the series continued in the Saturday time slot for the remainder of its run. The Chicago Tribune listings indicate the series started in Chicago on Feb. 23, 1945, when it shifted to Friday evening in New York. It was heard on WMAQ (670 KHz), Chicago, in the 11:30 PM time slot. Listeners in Washington, DC, heard their first show over WRC (980 KHz) starting on the same date and time as New York listeners, according to the listings from the Washington Post. It shifted to Fridays at 11:30 PM on Feb. 23, 1945 as it did in New York. No mention of the series could be found in Los Angeles Times listings, so it's not known if the series was heard nationwide. In 1948, NBC ended the series but the concept was continued in a new series, NBC UNIVERSITY THEATER. It was produced in Hollywood with the adaptations in single 60-minute shows. It aired on the same day but in a new time-slot, 9:00 to 10:00 PM. Log Comments: The primary source of information for this log was the New York Times radio listings. This information was verified against information from New York Public Library Digital Library Collections web site (http://digilib.nypl.org), from J. David Goldin's OTR database site (http://www.radiogoldindex.com) and others. The New York Times listings privided the title of the adapted novel for all broadcasts. The last column of the log, "CHK", is an identity checklist. A "E" in this column indicates the show is exists and is in circulation. An "N" indicates the script exists in the New York Public Library holdings. Chronological Log: Date Day Num Title CHK -------- --- --- -------------------------------------------- --- ....
